Fort Pike, Page 4

Two pointed bastions face the land side of the fort. The wall on the right side of this picture connects to the curved frontal face of the fort.

Another view of one of the bastions, with the sallyport evident on the left hand side of the picture. In the foreground, part of a brick retaining wall is evident. As designed, Fort Pike had two wet ditches, with a covered way on the glacis between the ditches. This feature has unfortunately been destroyed sometime between the time the army abandoned the fort in 1890 and present day.
Fort Pike is an interesting illustration of an unmodified early Third System fort, and is open to the public. However, it is in real need of repair and restoration if it is to remain viable. A near twin of Fort Pike, Fort Macomb (Wood) is located just a few miles away on another pass. It is not open to the public, though it is owned by the state. Both are located on US90 north of New Orleans, Louisiana.
